selections from Imaginary Portraits

I.

You stand lakeside

during winter, a yellow knit cap

strapped to your head, and stare

into a camera's lens, waiting

for someone you don't yet know

exists. This is what we call

the unexpected gaze of poetry,

similar to bluebirds nestling

in the crook of your arm

at night, feathering you with

the shape of darkness.
